Pafos tops winter destinations

A UK Post Office survey has proclaimed the Cypriot town of Pafos as the best short-haul winter destination, combining a much sought sun break with the most affordable packages.

For UK residents looking to get away this New Year’s holiday, the Cypriot joint 2017 European Capital of Culture offers the best value for money. According to the Post Office Travel Money survey, the cost of a one-week package holiday along with evening meals and drinks is just £339 (398 euros) per person.

Pafos comes top in terms of a bargain for holidaymakers among 12 destinations examined by the survey. The Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Tenerife are currently 19% more expensive than the southwestern Cyprus town, at £416 and £417 respectively.

The cost of such holidays has become more attractive for Britons over the last weeks, as the pound has recorded a rally. Since November 2 it has gained 6% against the euro. At the Post Office a pound buys you 1.1 euros instead of 1.11 at the beginning of November.

The US city of Orlando was the cheapest long-haul destination featured in the report, with holidays there setting UK travellers back £752.

Cancun in Mexico came top as the cheapest long-haul beach resort at £815, while the most expensive destination was Montego Bay in Jamaica at £1,288, followed by Dubai at £1,212.

Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, said: `Sterling`s recent rally means that holidaymakers will not have to dig quite so far into their pockets as they would have had to do a few weeks ago. Bargain-hunters will be well advised to add the cost of meals and drinks in resorts to the price of a holiday package to find the destination that will give them the best overall value.
