President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in a Joint Communiqué, issued after their meeting in Athens, on Wednesday, express their strong will for the resumption of the negotiation process on the Cyprus Problem.
The two heads of state reiterated the need for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, without foreign troops and third-party guarantees – a solution which must be based on the International Law, the UN resolutions and the European principles.
In the Joint Communiqué, Anastasiades and Mitsotakis declare that they are ready to “cooperate with the United Nations, in the context of the initiative assumed by the UN Secretary-General for the resumption of substantial negotiations for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem”.
During their meeting President Anastasiades briefed Greek Prime Minister on the recent developments as regards the Cyprus issue. More specifically, Anastasiades briefed Mitsotakis on his recent informal meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and their common understanding in principle as regards the terms of reference, as well as on the efforts made with UN Secretary General’s envoy in Cyprus Jane Holl Lute for the agreement on the terms of reference, in order for the negotiations to recommence.
Furthermore, President Anastasiades referred in detail to the problems caused by Turkey after the above-mentioned developments. Anastasiades also briefed Greek Prime Minister on the “aggressive and illegal actions of Turkey in the Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus, and Famagusta, as well as on the extreme obstinacy displayed by the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, during his recent illegal visit in the occupied areas of Cyprus”, says the Joint Communiqué.
In their joint announcement, Anastasiades and Mitsotakis expressed their great concern and strong contrasts with the illegal maritime actions of Turkey as well as with its declarations for the sealed-off section of Famagusta.
The two heads of state also agreed on coordinated action in order to confront Turkish illegal actions, while reiterating that Turkey must immediately stop these illegal actions and contribute in the effort for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus problem.
