Cypriot Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Marios Demetriades pledged that the sustainable development of the island`s shipping industry is among the government priorities.

Demetriades was addressing the Cyprus Shipping Chamber`s 27h Annual General held in Limassol on Thursday.

In his address, Demetriades recalled that the government will do its utmost to strengthen Cyprus shipping flag and the maritime sector in general which contributes approximately 7% to the island`s output.

He also recalled that the government has drafted a study on the future of the Cyprus shipping industry that was finalised last year.

“We aim to secure and develop further our role in global shipping and to offer the adequate conditions for a sustainable growth of the Cypriot maritime cluster,” he said, noting that the successful implementation of the new strategy will broaden the horizons and create new growth prospects in new markets.

On his part, Themis Papadopoulos, the Chamber`s President, said that Cyprus is slowly but steadily coming out of the financial difficulties it experienced in the last few years.

On March 31 Cyprus concluded its three-year financial assistance package after receiving €7.3 of the total €10 billion of the bailout by the EU and the IMF.

“It was very gratifying to see that during these difficult times, the shipping operational and taxation infrastructure in Cyprus and the Cyprus flag remained intact and very competitive,” he said, pointing out that “most importantly, Cyprus flag users remained loyal, supporting at the same time the efforts to reinforce Cyprus shipping in order to continue and enhance more its significant contribution to the Cyprus economy.”

Papadopoulos highlighted however that long-term planning and investment in essential ingredients such as the introduction of new mechanisms to safeguard this important sector, as well as to develop and reinforce it further is therefore required.

“To that end the Chamber strongly believes that if certain measures and policies that the Chamber has advocated for are implemented and resolved the soonest, the prospects for a substantial and sustainable growth of Cyprus` shipping is both tangible and achievable,” he stressed, adding by achieving this aim the shipping sector will also be able to play a leading role towards new economic growth in Cyprus.
