13/01/2016 15:13
Thousands of people will go through the examination of the origins of their wealth according to the intentions of the parliamentary committee on legal issues which continued the discussion of the matter today.

Asset declarations will be required by the President of the Republic, the President of the Parliament, the ministers, MPs, appointed officials, judges, local officials, members of Boards of semi-governmental organizations and government corporations and public servants on A11 scale or above.

The inclusion of tv channel owners, publishers, journalists and church officials in the list, is also being considered.

The parliament aims to control persons who manage public money and shape public opinion with their decisions.

Note that such a declaration will be also required by the spouses and children of state officials.

People under control will have to submit their assets declarations every 30 months, to be examined by a special committee.

Civil servants will be examined by the competent authority of the Public Service Committee, while if deemed necessary, the committee will be able to make an examination on civil servants below the A11 salary scale.

At the same time, the parliament, will attempt to shield the relevant legislation with an amendment to the Constitution, in order not to be deemed as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court as in the past.

The procedure for disclosing assets still remains open as well as who will be the members of the committees that will examine declarations of assets.

The aim of the committee is to conclude the discussion until February so that laws can be submitted during the meeting of the political party leaders or representatives in parliament for discussion.

The legal committee has set April as a landmark for the enactment of laws, when the parliament will be dissolved due to elections.
