Orphanides to the attorney general

The parliamentary committee on institutions does not accept the terms set by the former Central Bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides in order to attend a parliament session and forwards the matter to the attorney general.

Responding to the committee’s invitation to participate in a debate on the issue of Uniastrum, the supervisor who approved its acquisition replied that he intends to participate in the committee session via teleconference.

The committee will send a letter to the attorney general Costas Clerides informing him that Mr. Orphanides holds information which might be useful to the investigations on the banking scandal.

In his letter to the parliament, Mr. Orphanides says that because of his experience and knowledge regarding the functioning of the CB and the European decision-making framework in the crisis, he may contribute significantly to the investigation of certain aspects of the country’s economy.

"I had already publicly explained the devastating effects of CB handling, since March 2013 after the end of my term" he noted.

He added that he has noted with regret that “up to date there has not been a serious investigation of CB actions for the ELA, or Pimco or Blackrock, or A & M, nor for various other relevant issues despite evidence published regarding the alienation of properties of billions of euros which led to the destruction of the country’s economy".

Mr. Orphanides expressed the hope that with his participation in the meeting of the institutions committee he will contribute to its work in order to inform citizens about how assets were taken away from depositors, bond holders and Cypriot banks’ shareholders and begin the necessary corrective actions by the authorities of the country.
