Deputy Minister to the President Constantinos Petrides who accompanies Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades in his visit in the U.S., will be visiting Washington next week, heading the Cypriot delegation to a bilateral dialogue with the US government. The meeting is expected to take place between 4-6 October.

Speaking to CNA, Petrides said the visit to Washington is in the context of an institutionalized bilateral dialogue between the U.S. government and the Republic of Cyprus, to deal with a range of mainly economic issues.

"I will be travelling to Washington head of the Cypriot delegation consisted of technocrats on energy issues. Permanent Secretary at Ministry of Energy Stelios Himonas will also be with us, together with a representative of the Ministry of Finance and the Presidency. On behalf of the U.S. government, the technocratic team will be headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Amanda Sloat”, said Petrides.

The meeting aims to strengthen bilateral economic relation on economic issues, and as the Deputy Minister said "we will try to have some concrete results, to put on track a more specific cooperation, beyond the diplomatic relations which have actually been tightened”. As he said, Cyprus is changing, there are many reforms underway and the country could take lessons and expertise from the U.S. and set up cooperation in specific areas. "

Petrides also said that this is the second stage of the dialogue. The first stage involved military measures to combat terrorism and prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, he said.

"The cooperation with the US government should now take place in a wide framework that concerns all sectors”, he said.

The first part of this cooperation will be held in Washington and when completed it will be decided when there will be a corresponding American visit to Cyprus.
