The number of ships flying the Cypriot flag and the number of ship management and other companies with relevant activities based in Cyprus place our country among the top powers in merchant shipping internationally, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Marios Demetriades has said.

In a written statement on the occasion of World Shipping Day, on September 24, Demetriades said that “in order to grow Cypriot merchant shipping needs capable and properly trained members who will manage and operate its vessels securely and successfully.”

He added that “the rapid growth of technology in recent years and its use in the maritime industry has created new demands on the training and education of seamen.”

Highlighting the fact that Cyprus has always place an emphasis on the qualitative upgrade of maritime education, he noted that in the last decade it has focused on the correct and comprehensive implementation of the provisions of international conventions and has encouraged Cypriot students to follow maritime studies.

From 2012 onwards young people`s interest in becoming officers of the merchant shipping has increased significantly, he said, quoting data of the Merchant Shipping Department.
