Energy actions based of specific planning

The Republic of Cyprus has a plan and a specific programme with regard to its energy designs and on the basis of this planning it acts, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides stressed here today, fending off criticism from opposition parties on government policy on energy matters.

Those who, today, are being critical, will be proven wrong by developments, he added, and called on everybody to be patient.

The President of the Republic will pay important visits to countries of the region in relation to energy planning, he announced.

“We have specific planning, we are moving based on a plan and very concrete programme,” he said in statements to the press, reiterating that the recent discovery by ENI of what has been described as “supergiant” gas deposits off the Egyptian shores is a “positive development”.

This, he pointed out, upgrades the region as well as the Eastern Mediterranean in energy terms, something which is positive for Cyprus too.

“Our energy planning is not only continuing, it is also being strengthened. This is a very important issue and the government is not going to make statements before we have very concrete results. We have no wish to jeopardise or cause problems to the planning that is underway,” he said.

Replying to questions, he expressed hope that soon negotiations with Egypt on energy matters will conclude, noting that President Nicos Anastasiades will meet his Egyptian counterpart in New York, on September 28, where both leaders will be for the UN General Assembly.
