CTO: Revenue down in May

05/08/2015 13:14
The length of stay of tourists dropped by 10.3% in May, leading to a fall in revenue from tourism in the same month, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation said on Wednesday.

“Despite the increase in tourist arrivals in May 2015 by 4.9%, revenue from tourism in the same month recorded a decrease of 3.1% compared to May 2014, due to a reduction in the expenditure of tourists by 7.6%. The reduction in expenditure does not derive from the daily spending, which also increased by 3.0%, but from a decrease in the length of stay (10.3%),” the CTO explains in a press release.

The CTO added that daily spending increased for the majority of the markets (UK 13.4%, Israel 9.3%, Switzerland 9.1%, Greece 4.8%), while tourists from Russia and Germany spent less, 8.4% and 3.6% respectively.

The drop in spending is linked to the reduction in the duration of stay of tourists, experienced in almost all of the markets, the Organisation noted. The length of stay of tourists from the UK was reduced by 11.2%, from Russia by 9.4% and from Germany by 14.8%, it added.

“The reduction in the length of stay of tourists is an international trend and does not affect only Cyprus. The duration is directly related to the flight schedule of the airlines which is prepared based on their plans and criteria,” the CTO says.
