Communications and Works Minister Marios Demetriades toured Asia as part of his efforts to promote the Cypriot candidacy for the position of the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation.

Andreas Chrysostomou, Acting Director of the Cyprus Department of Merchant Shipping, is a candidate for the IMO top position.

An official statement said Demetriades held a meeting with India`s Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Deputy Foreign Minister Shri Navtej Singh Sarna and the Director General of the Malaysian Transport Ministry Ismail Hj Bakar.

Demetriades urged Malaysia and India to support Chrysostomou candidacy, noting his election will further contribute to building trust among members of the organisation in the work that the IMO is undertaking.

Cyprus, he added, has always been a keen supporter of the IMO`s work and attaches great significance to the important role of the organisation in promoting international cooperation, a prerequisite for developing and implementing a complete legislative maritime framework.

Issues of mutual interest were also examined during Demetriades` meetings as well as enhancing cooperation prospects with Malaysia and India.

The elections for the IMO SG will be held in London in July.
