Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Natasa Pilides attended on Friday an informal Competitiveness Council and submitted concrete proposals regarding the Single Market, aiming at cutting red tape, facilitating access of businesses to information and digitalizing administrative procedures.

The informal Council was convened by the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Pilides attended via videoconference, an announcement by the Energy Ministry says.

Discussions of EU Ministers focused on ways to further deepen the Single Market through an action plan, in order to overcome the crisis caused by the pandemic the soonest possible and to create the conditions paving the way for the development of Europe’s economy.

Cyprus welcomes the new momentum for the Single Market and expresses full support to efforts aiming at strengthening it further, Pilides said during her intervention. “Only a strong and genuine Single Market will allow businesses and our businesspeople to make use of all the benefits and synergies that it has to offer” particularly now that we have to succeed in our dual target for green and digital transition, the Minister added.

EU Ministers were called to express their views on the action plan, aiming at a more effective implementation of Single Market rules, in order to facilitate a rapid economic recovery.

Among others, Pilides referred to the need to improve information provided through the Single Digital Gateway (SDG) for businesses and spoke about the need to further enhance the Solvit network, which provides an effective tool for out of court dispute resolution. The Minister spoke finally about the need to reinforce the newly established Single Market Enforcement Task Force (SMET), the announcement concludes.
