Number of jobless plunges by 63% in September 2021

The number of registered unemployed persons in September plunged by an annual 63% with the steep reduction mainly driven by the sectors of Tourism and Trade.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), the unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of September 2021, declined to 11,324 persons, from 30,718 the year before.

Based on the seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for September 2021 decreased to 15,907 persons in comparison to 18,282 in the previous month, Cystat said.
 
Compared with September 2020, the jobless persons registered a reduction of 19,394 persons or 63.1%.
 
The steep decline is attributed mainly to the sector of accommodation and food service activities (a decrease of 6,115 persons), trade (a decrease of 3,520), manufacturing (a decrease of 1,156), transportation and storage (a decrease of 996), financial and insurance activities (a decrease of 912) as well as to the decrease of 998 persons recorded as newcomers in the labour market.
