Four deaths and 3,197 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday

Cypriot health authorities on Wednesday announced four new deaths due to COVID-19 and 3,197 new cases, with total deaths and infections since the outbreak of the pandemic reaching 669 and 215,271 respectively.

Furthermore, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Health, hospitalisations rose to 266 while patients treated in serious conditions in Intensive Treatment Units and Increased Care Units rising to 93 from 76 the day before.

A total of 112,233 tests were carried out today, with the daily positivity rate declining to 2.85%.

According to the Ministry of Health, the new fatalities concern two men aged 57 and 87 years old who were receiving treatment in the Nicosia General Hospital’s ICU and in the Limassol General Hospital respectively and two women aged 68 and 81 years old who were receiving treatment in Limassol General Hospital’s ICU and in Pafos General Hospital.

Total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic amount to 669, of whom 419 or 62.6% are male patients and 250 or 37.4% female, with a median age of 75.9 years.

Furthermore, patients receiving treatment in public hospitals amounted to 266, of whom 93 are being treated in serious condition. Of the patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 4 are in Intensive Treatment Units but are not connected to a ventilator and 61 patients are in Increased Care Units, the Ministry added.

Data show that 76,32% of the patients have no vaccination history, while 16 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious are intubated in serious condition in Intensive Treatment Units.

According to the Ministry, the 3,197 new COVID cases were detected following 112,233 tests, of which 9,558 were PCR tests and 102,675 rapid antigen tests.

A total of 317 cases were detected from 2,489 samples taken in the context of contact tracing, 43 new cases were diagnosed from 1,681 tests done at the airports, 355 new infections were detected from 4,843 tests carried out at the private initiative, 26 new infections were diagnosed from 381 samples taken by General Hospitals’ Microbiology Labs, 1,352 new cases were detected after 56,091 rapid tests were carried out in private labs and pharmacies, 1,097 new cases were diagnosed after 46,584 tests carried out in the context of the Ministry of Health rapid test programme, while 7 new infections were diagnosed from 164 samples taken in the context of GP referrals and checks among special groups.

The total new cases include 90 new cases detected in the context of testing in high schools.
