Deputy Minister: Shipping industry resilient and competitive

Shipping industry has proven to be resilient and remains competitive offering the biggest benefits to the Cyprus economy, Deputy Minister for shipping Vasilios Demetriades has said.

Speaking before the House Transport Committee, the Deputy Minister said that the situation as regards the sanctions on Russia, following the invasion in Ukraine, is manageable, adding that efforts are underway for Cyprus shipping to enter into the Asian market rather than being dependent on just one or two markets.

"We will soon announce the opening of an office in Tokyo" the Deputy Minister announced, in order for Cyprus shipping to remain resilient and competitive, regardless of any developments.

He briefed the parliamentarians on the challenges the shipping industry is faced with, the pandemic crisis, the efforts for green transition and digital transformation.

Demetriades also spoke of the efforts for blue economy to become known in younger generations and the potentials as regards the job market.

He also spoke of the actions on European and world level to minimize the impact of the emissions and to go carbon neutral.
