The government hopes to be able to announce soon a set of incentives for consumers to buy electric cars, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Marios Demetriades said on Saturday.
In statements to the press during an event to promote electric cars, Demetriades said that it is a transport means which safeguards the environment, adding that the government has already secured European funding.
“We hope that we will be able to see more electric cars on the streets in the next couple of years,” he pointed out.
Replying to a question, he said the amount is in the order of one million euros, adding at the same time that he believes more incentives should be made available because electric cars are more expensive than conventional cars.
At the same time, he said, the benefits from saving energy are significant.
