Motor vehicles sales down by 2.4% in January – August 2021

Motor vehicle registrations followed a downward path in the period of January – August 2021 despite the economic recovery this year following the downturn last year due to Covid.

According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) the total registrations of motor vehicles decreased by 2.4% to 24,372 in January-August 2021, from 24,969 in January-August last year.

Passenger saloon cars decreased to 18,775 from 19,263 in January-August 2020, recording a fall of 2.5%.

Of the total passenger saloon cars, 7,558 or 40.3% were new and 11,217 or 59.7% were used cars, Cystat added.

Goods conveyance vehicles decreased by 12.7% to 2,749 in January-August 2021, compared to 3,148 in January-August 2020. Light goods vehicles decreased by 19.8% to 2,024 and heavy goods vehicles by 5.3% to 338, while road tractors (units of trailers) increased by 29.6% to 140 and rental vehicles by 54.4% to 247.

Motorcycles with engines below 50cc recorded an increase of 43,8% to 184 in January-August 2021, compared to 128 in the corresponding period of the previous year, while Motorcycles with engines over 50cc increased to 2,344 in January-August 2021, compared to 1,932 in January-August 2020, recording an increase of 21.3%.

In August motor vehicles registration numbered 2,298, recording an annual decrease of 28.6%, whereas passenger saloon cars declined by an annual 29.4% to 1,796.
