The notable upsurge in new passenger car sales is changing the dynamics of the local car market, with new car importers gaining speed against their older competitors.

The car industry is heading for its third year of recovery after the heavy blow suffered in previous years due to the economic crisis, with the passenger car (saloon) registrations in 2015 reaching the highest point since 2011.

The situation continues to present a significant improvement this year, with sales increasing sharply.

In the first two months of 2016, Nissan captured the largest market share in new passenger cars with 13,9% of new sales.

The registrations of Nissan rose to 270 from 193 the first two months of 2015. The model with the most sales is the Qashqai (142 vehicles).

In second place is the KIA with 13,1% share, recording a marked share growth of 7,8 percentage points compared to last year when the share was 5,3%. The most popular model is the KIA Rio with 121 sales, followed by the Picanto (55).

In third and fourth place are the Ford and Toyota followed by the Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover, Volvo and Hyundai.

Ford's share rose to 11,9% from 9,2% gaining 2,7% over last year. The most popular cars of the importer are the Fiesta and the Focus.

Toyota's share fell to 10,6% from 16,4% last year recording a decrease of 5,8 percentage points.

The Hyundai Tucson has a notable presence in the market with 42 sales this year and the Land Rover Discovery with 40 registrations. The two models had no sales during the first two months of 2015.

The Brand Manager of Hyundai Harris Papacharalambous states that from 2013 and onwards, there is a continuous increase in car sales in Cyprus and especially in SUVs. \

“The automotive market seems to recover along with the economic recovery,” he says.

The total number of new vehicles for private use was in the first two months of 2016 reached 1.940 from 1.471 last year.
