Saloon car registrations surge

27/04/2015 13:04
Private vehicle registrations in March recorded the highest increase in the past four months, as the interest of buyers seems to be boosted especially for used cars.

The sector of cars, which was severely hit as sales reached a low in 2013, appears to be on a recovery path, while market participants believe that the situation is being stabilized.

Registrations go up since February 2014, with the exception of December 2014.

According to Cystat data, total private car registrations stood at 1.504 in March 2015.

Compared to March last year, when registrations had reached 1.357, there has been an increase of 10,8%.

According to the same figures, registrations of new saloon cars in March reached 694 from 693 in March 2014.

Used cars recorded an increase of 22% to 810 against 664 in the corresponding month of 2014.

Sales manager of Mercedes Lakis Kostekoglou told StockWatch that the market seems to have stabilized although the increase concerns mostly smaller vehicles and not luxury brands.

The decision of the two major banks to cut rates for car purchases contributed to the increase in vehicle sales, sales manager of Ford Charalambos Papacharalambous said, stressing that the upward trend focuses on SUV and hatchback vehicles.

Mr. Kostekoglou noted that the first quarter is encouraging and expressed hope this positive trend is maintained while he said there are imponderable factors such as the developments in relation to Greece and the foreclosures in Cyprus that do not allow safe predictions.

With regard to the first quarter of 2015, private car registrations increased by 9,1% to 4.567 compared with 4.186 in the corresponding period of 2014.
