Saloon cars decline at record high

The decline in private saloon car registrations was kept high in May 2013, showing the severe blow in the sector.

Economic conditions have largely affected consumption, which is reflected in the course of the sector which shrinks rapidly.

According to official figures released today by the Statistical Service, total private saloon car registrations fell to 1,007 in May 2013.

Compared to last year, when registrations had reached 1,912 vehicles, the decrease amounts to 47.3%.

This is the second biggest drop in registrations.

The largest decline was observed in March 2013, at the 12-day closure of the banks, when private saloon car registrations fell by 49.4% compared to March last year.

On the same basis, new saloon car registrations in May showed a decline of 55.4% to 479 from 1,075 in May 2012.

The used car market is facing the same difficulties.

Used car registrations for the same month fell by 36.9% to 528 against 837 in the corresponding month of 2012.

For the period January - May 2013, private saloon cars decreased by 38.4% falling to 5,628, compared with 9,135 in the same period of 2012.

The registrations record double-digit annual decline each month since August 2011.
