President meets Putin

President of the Republic, Nicos Anastasiades and President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin had talks on the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Russia.

According to a written statement by the Government Spokesman, Nicos Christodoulides, during the dinner hosted last night by the President of the Republic of Italy for the heads of state and government participating in the ASEM Summit, in Milan, the President of the Republic had the opportunity to hold an extensive discussion with the President of the Russian Federation Mr Vladimir Putin, in a most friendly and cordial atmosphere.

The discussion between the two leaders during the dinner concerned the entire range of the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Russia, the EU-Russia relations, as well as the current phase of the Cyprus problem with emphasis on the latest developments as these were shaped as a result of the Turkish navtex with regard to the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus.
President Putin reaffirmed the Russian position of principle with regard to both the solution of the Cyprus problem and the inalienable right of the Republic of Cyprus to exploit its natural resources within its EEZ, and characterized any violation of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus as unacceptable.

“The two leaders agreed to be in an ongoing dialogue and, depending on developments, for respective visits to be arranged”, the statement concluded.
