Russian President Vladimir Putin assured President Anastasiades that Russia will continue to support Cyprus to tackle the financial crisis, leaving open the possibility of participation of Russian capital in debt issuance of the Cypriot state.

According to information from the Cypriot government, the Russian President referred to the areas on which Cyprus can be supported with the encouragement and assistance of Moscow, such as banks, energy, aviation and agriculture.

The Russian President reportedly pointed out to Mr. Anastasiades that there are three banks of Russian interests and a large number of Russian companies on the island.
Specifically, in relation to the role that could be played by the Russian banks in the recovery of the economy, is, as he said, to intensify their activity on the island, with the encouragement of the Russian government.

He pointed to the Cypriot President that Russian banks could further contribute to the stimulus effort by participating in upcoming debt issuances of the Cypriot state.

At this point he reminded that Russia had bought Eurobonds totaling €750 million issued by Cyprus in June.

The Russian international companies also play an important role to the Cyprus economy, he added.

In his statement at the joint press conference, Putin said that the Russian investments in Cyprus amount to $33 billion, over 80% of all foreign investment on the island.

Extensive reference was also made on energy, assuring Mr Anastasiades that Russian companies want their involvement in the exploitation of hydrocarbons, either via shareholding in other companies already involved in the Cyprus EEZ or based on the procedures of a new tender of plot sale in the EEZ.

Government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, speaking to the state radio this morning, reported that during a discussion of this issue, Putin asked his associates and those of the Cypriot president to see by himself - with the help of technology - the Cypriot EEZ, the active plots and the position of Barbaros (at the port of occupied Famagusta) something that was done on the spot.

Prospect of increased Russian arrivals

The Russian President referred to the prospect of increasing the flow of tourists from Russia to Cyprus and vice versa, as there is strong interest from Russian airlines to use the two international airports of Cyprus as their base.

It was agreed between the two presidents that the transport ministers of the two countries meet the soonest possible to discuss this prospect.

Putin did not exclude the possibility of the airline, in which the Russian state participates, to take part in the procedure for the purchase of the Cyprus Airways trademark.

The Russian President expressed deep concern with respect to the effects caused due to EU sanctions against Moscow in Cypriot agriculture and Russian trade.

He noted, according to sources, that is common orientation between the two countries in terms of synergies to deal with the EU sanctions.

He expressed the view that one of the measures that could be implemented is the establishment of companies with the participation of Russian and Cypriot investors, with the aim of exporting Cypriot agricultural products necessary for the Russian market.
