Canada and Cyprus are set to enhance their bilateral relations, following the establishment of a High Commission by the Republic of Cyprus in Ottawa.

Cyprus` High Commissioner to Canada, the first ever to be based in Ottawa, Pavlos Anastasiades presented on Tuesday his credentials to the Governor General of Canada David Johnston.

He is based in Ottawa following a Government decision last year to upgrade diplomatic representation of the Republic in Canada by establishing the High Commission in Canada`s capital.

According to an announcement, the Governor General of Canada recognized the importance of the establishment of a High Commission and expressed the appreciation of his country, noting that the decision constitutes an excellent indication of the bilateral relationship and marks a new phase in the already friendly relations the two countries have. Moreover it provides better prospects for further strengthening of bilateral relations.

He noted that, although until now trade between the two countries is rather limited, there are many new investment opportunities to this end.

He expressed the hope that Canada and Cyprus will continue their productive dialogue for peace, security and prosperity, which will be strengthened through the ties between the two peoples and Cyprus` diplomatic presence in Canada.

After the official ceremony, the two men had a private meeting attended by the Political Advisor to Governor General and the Director General of the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Europe and Eurasia.

The Governor General, according to the announcement, referred to the special place that Cyprus has in the heart of Canadians, thousands of whom have served in the Canadian contingent of the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus UNFICYP since 1964, among them the father of a Canadian official.

He also expressed his wish for a success to the efforts for a Cyprus solution and reunification of the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The High Commissioner expressed the government`s gratefulness for the Canadian contribution to the United Nations peacekeeping operations in Cyprus especially during the 1974 Turkish invasion and advancement of the Turkish forces at Nicosia International Airport.

The High Commissioner briefed the Governor General on the current phase of the UN-backed negotiations to solve the Cyprus problem, which aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.

He said that Canada is a successful and well-functioning federation and could share its experience with Cyprus, thus contributing constructively to the efforts to yield results.

Governor General and High Commissioner exchanged views on a number of issues of international affairs, with emphasis on Canada - EU relations. They condemned the terrorist attacks in Brussels and stressed that it is important to tackle terrorism but at the same time one should be extra cautious so that this will not be politically exploited.

The two men also discussed the refugee crisis.

The High Commissioner briefed his interlocutor on the course of the Cyprus economy and further explained the possibilities to deepen and broaden the Cyprus-Canadian relationship to the mutual benefit in a variety of areas, such as commerce, economy, energy and education.
