International media comment on russian agreement

Cyprus was in the centre of international media on the occasion of the visit of President Nikos Anastasiades in Moscow and especially in relation to the agreement signed on granting military facilities to Russia.

Cyprus was characterized a "Trojan horse" from the German Deutsche Welle, noting that Cyprus, Greece and Hungary, are Moscow’s Trojan horses in the European Union.

It also indicated that Cyprus received the gift of a loan restructuring.

The restructuring of the loan of Cyprus and the rate cut had been approved by the Russian government in September 2013. Yesterday a formal confirmation was made by Duma, despite the fact that the agreement of the loan restructuring is applied normally.

In addition, CNBC criticized Nicosia arguing that Cyprus should take into account that its renewed cozy relationship with Russia could be a dangerous and irritating card to play with Europe and the U.S.

BBC also made extensive reference, focusing on Mr. Putin’s statement that "our friendly ties aren't aimed against anyone," and remarked that the statement was intended to reassure Turkey.

BBC also reported that a similar statement was made by President Anastasiades in order to reassure the Americans and British.

President Anastasiades responding to a question said yesterday that many of our friends, meaning the EU and the US, who show their concern for other countries (Ukraine), remain silent in the case of the continued occupation of Cyprus and the violation of the Cypriot EEZ.

The representative of the European Commission was also asked about the agreement with Russia yesterday and merely said that he would not like to comment on Cypriot President’s visit to Russia at this point.

Foreign Minister Giannakis Kasoulides who was a guest at tv channel Mega last night, said that Trojan horse talk is nonsense and noted that the occasion of the international media reactions was a bloated, in his expression, report by Reuters about what an agreement for docking Russian ships in the port of Limassol would constitute.

The Russian ships docking agreement, said Kasoulides, was not made today.

He explained that "humanitarian issues, such as the evacuation of Russian citizens from areas of the Middle East, search and rescue issues if needed, are included in a Memorandum of Understanding along with the issue of docking. Nothing less and nothing more will happen than the practice applied for years" observed the Foreign Minister.
