The total cost of the Cyprus accession in the EU will reach 1 billion pounds, which corresponds to 16% of the GDP, said Government Spokesman, Kypros Chrysostomides on Tuesday. It is noted that on an interview to the Greek newspaper “Typos tis Kyriakis”, Cyprus President, Tassos Papadopoulos had stated that the total cost will reach 1 trillion and 200 billion pounds.

Mr. Chrysostomides expressed his optimism on the prospects of the island’s economy for the second half of 2003, referring to the recent forecasts of the Planning Office. “The prospects in the sectors of tourism, industry and constructions are better, while unemployment will remain to 3.5% for 2003 and inflation will be stabilized at 4.5%. The government’s efforts to reduce the fiscal deficit will continue”, Mr. Chrysostomides noted.
