More increases in the future?

03/10/2003 14:29
The government has no intention to proceed to other increase in consumer taxes, unless there is a change in the EU directives, Finance Minister, Marcos Kyprianou said on Friday, stressing that a change in the directives means that Cyprus must comply with them immediately.

Mr. Kyprianou did not rule out the possibility of increasing the selling price of water, however “this depends on the Water Board. It is not a matter of taxation, but a matter of cost and duty imposed to the consumers”.

As regards to the price hike in petrol, cigarettes and tobacco, Mr. Kyprianou said that this was not unexpected, since this date had been set one year ago.

No abolition of car license

Invited to comment on the proposals of the MPs to abolish car license, the Minister rejected this possibility, stressing that the government must examine the practical part of the enforcement of a proposal, as well as the cost in economy, inflation and other sectors.
