Finance Minister, Marcos Kyprianou said that a complementary budget would cover the expenditures “inherited” by the former government, despite the negative impact this might have on the state finances. Mr. Kyprianou clarified, however, that there were no irregularities on behalf of the former government.

Commenting on the statements of the House Chairman, Demetris Christofias, concerning the financial commitments that the present government inherited by the former, the Minister avoided giving further details publicly, but stressed that a large part of the expenditures concern a specific ministry.

Mr. Kyprianou said that commitments must be covered up with the new Budget 2004, although some of them are not included in the budget for 2003. On the question whether these expenditures were approved by the Parliament, Mr. Kyprianou pointed out that this should be investigated.

Nevertheless, former Foreign Minister, Yiannakis Cassoulides said that expenditures are approved by the budgets and the budgets by the Parliament.
