FinMin: Fiscal targets unchanged

15/07/2016 09:22
The fact that the Cypriot economy no longer has deficits and the state budget functions on the basis of a balanced budget allows the government to give something back to households and businesses which had undertaken the heaviest burden of the crisis the economy suffered, Finance Minister Harris Georgiades said on Thursday evening.

Georgiades who was replying to questions during an event on the consequences of Brexit in Nicosia, organized by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Association for Social Reform (OPEK) assured that the governments economic goals remain unchanged.

Referring in particular to the fact that a number of positions will be filled in the public sector, he pointed out that no policemen have been hired since 2010. The government will hire the first 70 public servants while thousands have left, he noted. Today, he added, we have over 5,000 less public servants.

At the same time he assured that a policy restricting the hiring of new employees in the public service is still in place.

Georgiades also explained that fiscal planning for the next three years has left a margin for further positions to be filled.

Replying to a question on the immovable property tax, the minister said that “since the government no longer has deficits and functions on the basis of a balanced budget it is safe to give back to households and businesses which have shouldered the heaviest burden of the crisis we went through.”
