DISY Dep. Chairman Vs AKEL

10/06/2003 15:34
DISY Deputy Chairman, Averof Neophytou, said on Tuesday that the government’s criticisms against the economic policy of the former government are “inspired” by the AKEL General Secretary, Demetris Christofias.

Rejecting the criticisms on the fiscal deficit, Mr. Neophytou criticized AKEL and DIKO for their stance on the tax reform: “Weren’t they aware of the “holes” of the economy, created by their zero policy”, he noted.

Mr. Neophytou said that the cash basis system made it impossible to include the provisions for the annual state expenditure of 2002, which had been prepared by the former government in September and emphasized that AKEL and Mr. Kyprianou were well aware of the CYP 270 million. With regard to the amount of CYP 60 million for the defense, Mr. Neophytou said that no sums are granted by the state funds if they are not approved by the House Defense Committee first.

Mr. Neophytou stressed that the statements of the Finance Minister concerning the false figures on the economy will harm Cyprus, as the European Union and the international agencies do not distinguish the Presidents or the Finance Ministers of the Republic.

Responding on the question what should the government do in the future on economy, Mr. Neophytou referred once again to AKEL General Secretary, stressing that the state interventions and the “long gone by” policies will harm the island’s economy. Mr. Nephytou urged the Cyprus President and the Finance Minister to “convince their partner” to avoid dogmatism and proceed to the privatization of the semi-governmental organizations.
