Cabinet examined developments on Cyprus issue

The President of the Republic and the interlocutor of the Greek/Cypriot side briefed the Council of Ministers today on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem.

After the meeting, the Government Spokesman Mr Nikos Christodoulides told the press that the President and the Greek Cypriot interlocutor M Andreas Mavroyiannis briefed the members of the National Council on the latest developments on the Cyprus problems with regard to the second phase of the negotiations that began on 6 May.

He added that “our side is working constructively so that it will be possible to have common ground, create convergences and to also narrow the distance between the positions of the two sides in order to be possible to enter into the third phase, the so-called 'give-and-take'. For this to happen, the Turkish Cypriot side must submit proposals on all the core issues, as it has publicly committed to do, both by the joint communique and Mrs Buttenheim’s statement of 2 June.”

Replying to a question, the Spokesman said that “It is very important that the international community, those countries that have an interest in the developments on the Cyprus problem, realize that there must be a submission of proposals on all the core issues,” pointing out that "this has been the steady Greek Cypriot position over time that is fully understood, otherwise we cannot proceed to the phase of 'give-and-take' if we discuss only issues that interest one of the two sides .”
