Crossing continues with long queues

24/04/2003 12:42
Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots are queuing at the check points of Ledra Palace and Pergamos on Thursday, as 733 Greek Cypriots have crossed from Ledra Palace and 20 from Pergamos. So far 330 Turkish Cypriots have crossed into the free areas of the Republic, despite long queues due to “formalities”.

Government Spokesman, Kypros Chrisostomides, said that the government will facilitate the Turkish Cypriots with the provision of free transport to Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot newspapers host the issue on their first page. “Kibris” reports that this is a “historical day” for the Turkish Cypriots while “Halkin Seshi” highlight that both the Greek and the Turkish Cypriots are pleased.

The newspaper “Volkan” deals with the procedures at the check points, while “Vatan” reports that Denktash’s initiative is “fairly surprising”. “Kibrisli” refers to a “historical day”.

“Yeni Duzen” reports that “People have won”.

The newspaper “Afrika” highlights that the “Turkish Cypriots felt free for the first time” and stressed that the “opposition” parties have broken away from the Turkish Cypriot people.

“Birlik” has expressed its discontent for the Greek Cypriot government for not allowing the crossing of Turkish Cypriot cars in the free areas.
