Deputies discuss security

19/01/2017 09:28
Α working group at the level of deputies is expected to resume deliberations on Thursday morning, at Mont Pelerin, Switzerland, where discussions on the issue of security and guarantees commenced yesterday after last week`s Conference on Cyprus.

The Conference convened on January 12, in Geneva, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and with the participation of the leaders of Cyprus' two communities, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, the Foreign Ministers of Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom as guarantor powers and in the presence of the European Union as an observer/interested party. Participants decided last week to establish a working group with the task to identify specific questions on this important aspect of Cyprus` settlement talks, as well as the instruments needed to address them. Meetings are set to continue until Friday, January 20.

Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday that the aim of the meeting is to draft a working document that will allow for the continuation of the Conference on Cyprus at political level. Deputies will not take any decisions on the future process or on the substance, Christodoulides clarified.

Wednesday`s meeting started with a morning session, with each side drafting a set of questions and answers on the subject while deputies continued deliberations in the afternoon, after a recess.

Developments in Switzerland with regard to Cyprus were discussed on Wednesday between the President Anastasiades and US Vice President Joe Biden, during a telephone conversation the two men had. Biden also spoke yesterday on the phone with Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras and the Turkish Cypriot leader.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Anastasiades and Akinci have been engaged in UN-led talks since May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
