The House Refugees’ Committee requested on Wednesday a financial aid from the EU to reconstruct the areas neighbouring and/or situated on the buffer zone. Within the framework of the EU policy to support the T/C occupied territories, the Commission has requested the dispatch of the relevant documents on the bicommunal projects by the Nicosia Municipality, as well as the amendment of the package (CYP 27mln) for the reconstruction of the neighbouring areas by the government.

Chairman of the House Refugees’ Committee, Aristophanes Georgiou, said that the areas on the buffer zone may become the “core” of reactivation for the G/C and T/C.

The Nicosia Mare has requested the financing of the construction of three “Information Centers” for the T/C and considers the widening of the roads on the buffer zone with the support of the EU and the US.

General Manager of the Internal Affairs Ministry, Kyriakos Triantafyllides, agreed that the government should reexamine the package of measures for the buffer zone, following the partial lifting of restrictions in the free movement across the island.

Mr. Triantafyllides also stressed that the adoption of the EU measures will affect positively the reconstruction projects on the buffer zone.
