President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades departed on Sunday for New York, where he will meet UNSG Antonio Guterres.
The President will also address an investor`s summit on Cyprus and hold meetings with oil and gas companies` officials.
According to an official press release, the President, accompanied by Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides and Ministers of Finance, Energy and Transport as well as Banks` CEOs, will attend on Monday a dinner organized to his honor by the Cypriot overseas community in New York. He will also declare the termination of the trading session of the New York Stock Exchange on the 21st of March.
On the next day, the President will hold a meeting with UNSG Antonio Guterres, in the UN headquarters.
During his stay in New York, the Cypriot President will be meeting with Archbishop of America, Demetrios.
President Anastasiades will also address the luncheon organized by the International Forum "Invest in Cyprus", which will take place at the Metropolitan Club.
The Forum is organized by Capital Link in cooperation with the Cyprus Shipowners` Association, the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency and the Chambers of Commerce of Cyprus and the USA. The conference aims to inform major US companies and investors about the investment opportunities in Cyprus as well as the development of business and trade partnerships.
On the evening of the 22 of March the President will attend a working dinner with officials from ExxonMobil.
On the next day, the President will hold separate meetings with British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson and the Foreign and European Affairs Minister of Slovakia Miroslav Lajcak, who will chair the 72nd UN General Assembly.
The Cyprus issue, investments and energy will be the focus of President`s visit to New York, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has said.
On the evening of the 23rd of March he will depart to Rome where he will attend the Informal EU Summit for the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaty.
The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN led talks between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities resumed in May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
The talks were interrupted in mid February by the Turkish Cypriot side, which demands that a decision passed by the Cypriot Parliament relating to a 1950 referendum on union with Greece is revoked, claiming this indicates a shift in the Greek Cypriot side`s goal for a federal solution. The amendment provides that there will be a very brief reference to the referendum at schools.
President Anastasiades has described the House decision as wrong and called on the leader of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, who walked out of the talks, to return to the negotiating table to discuss pending issues with a view to reach a mutually acceptable agreement to reunite the country.
