Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has said he would feel sad if the peace talks lead to a deadlock, adding that the current state of stagnation in the negotiations is the result of claims which do not serve the interests of either the Greek Cypriots or the Turkish Cypriots.
Addressing an event at the Presidential Palace, to present the national strategy for the youth for the next five years, he stressed that “it is not enough to say we want a solution, we respect the concerns of the other, it is high time to actually prove it.”
“I am sad to see that we may be faced with a possible deadlock in the peace effort, a stagnation which we see resulting, not from our own lack of will, but unfortunately from claims which do not serve at all either the Greek Cypriots or the Turkish Cypriots,” he noted.
He said that one cannot have at the back of his mind the interests of third parties or a third country, when at the same time one is discussing ways to establish conditions which would allow the young people from both communities to create together.
“I would like to believe that Eide’s efforts will yield results, give us what we are seeking: a substantive dialogue,” the President said, adding that he is trying to overcome problems hailing from the past, to overcome mistrust.
This, he pointed out, cannot be the work of just one side, it must be the work of the other side too, in order to be successful.
“We have exhausted the dialogue on the four core issues of the Cyprus problem and now is the time to address the other issue, to rid our country of Turkey’s occupation troops, to abolish the anachronistic treaties of guarantees” he added, saying that Cyprus does not need guarantees nor does it need an occupation army.
He said he wants to provide security for the generations to come, something which would attract investment and offer prospects for a better future.
