President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades has said on Tuesday that some progress has been achieved in the UN backed talks for the reunification of Cyprus.

Speaking to reporters after returning from his latest meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, in the framework of the negotiations for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue, President Anastasiades described the meeting as “good”, noting that “some progress has been achieved and this is very satisfactory”.

Asked if the common understandings have become convergences, the President replied “not all of them, some”.

To a question if he ascertains a change in the Turkish Cypriot leader`s stance due to developments in the occupied north of Cyprus the President replied “no, on the contrary”.

Invited to say how important he views the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland, starting Wednesday, and if the international community wants to maintain the momentum for a solution, the President said “what we want is not to maintain the momentum but a solution”.

He explained that the solution should be “acceptable, answer all the concerns of the Greek Cypriots and not disregard the concerns of the Turkish Cypriots. The issue is the concerns of one side not to affect the rights of the other”.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed talks resumed last May, aiming to reunify the island under a federal roof.
