Spokesman: Efforts still underway to secure terms of reference

04/09/2019 14:01

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told the press on Wednesday that efforts are still underway to secure terms of reference that would pave the way for the resumption of Cyprus talks.

Prodromou said that UNSG Envoy Jane Holl Lute's meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades was productive and that when there is something to be announced, they would announce it. Wednesday`s meeting lasted an hour and it was the fourth one Lute had with the President. At 1145 the Envoy is set to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci.

The Spokesman was asked if Lute will hold a tripartite meeting with the leaders and said that there is nothing to be announced as of now.  Replying to a question on whether there is an obstacle that stands in the way, he replied "efforts continue".

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in the summer of 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
