UNSG’s report on Cyprus

06/10/2017 09:16
Thee UN Secretary-General’s report on his Mission of Good Offices in Cyprus has been handed to the members of the Security Council, UNSG spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric has said, while answering a question regarding the efforts made by the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus to be recognized internationally, he said that that’s not for the Secretary-General to decide upon.

During a Press Briefing at UN' headquarters in New York and asked whether Antonio Guterres has submitted his report to the Security Council, UNSG spokesperson said that “the copies of the report have got to the Security Council. I don’t think it’s a public document. It’s been shared with the Security Council”.

Dujarric was also invited to comment on the statements made by the so called Turkish Cypriot foreign minister that they would from now on follow a policy which will allow them to be recognized within the international community as a sovereign state or establish an autonomous region which will be a part of Turkey.

He said that “the recognition of any territory in international organization, that’s an issue that is up to the member states, the members of each international organization. There is a procedure for the United Nations; there is a procedure for other international organizations. That’s not for the Secretary-General to decide upon”.

Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks to reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, have yet to yield results. The latest effort in July this year ended inconclusively and UN Secretary General said an historic opportunity was lost.
