21/09/2017 10:27
The United States are ready to help in the resumption of Cyprus talks and are committed for a solution of the Cyprus problem within a United Nations framework.

This was reaffirmed, by Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Jonathan Cohen during a meeting he had with Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides, in New York, diplomatic sources say.

The meeting focused on developments in the Cyprus problem. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest round of UN-peace talks at the Swiss resort of Crans - Montana ended without an agreement. Talks held under the auspices of the UN aim at reunifying Cyprus under a federal roof.

Christodoulides assured Cohen of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades’ readiness and willingness to take part in negotiations to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of UN parameters and in the framework set by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Cohen assured that the United States are ready to help with the resumption of talks and are committed for a solution within the UN Secretary General’s framework, diplomatic sources say.

He further said that the work achieved so far in the talks should be made the most of.

The same sources say that Cohen and other US officials should be expected to visit Cyprus before the end of the year, to see what can be done about the Cyprus problem but also to enhance bilateral relations.

Cohen is expected to visit Greece and Turkey in the coming days.
