Multi-bill of reforms approved at Parl't committee level

12/07/2013 17:30
A multi-bill foreseeing an overhaul of the civil service, a new tax code and other changes in exchange for further rescue loans from international creditors, was approved by Parliament's economic affairs committee on Friday with conservative New Democracy and PASOK voting in favor and Democratic Left, which quit the coalition last month, voting against it.

Debate on the provisions of the bill, which number more than 100, is to continue in the House plenary session with a vote expected on Wednesday.

Meanwhile local authority workers continued sitins at municipal buildings in Athens and other cities on Friday to protest plans for layoffs and wage cuts in the civil service.

Earlier in the day mayors from around the country attended an emergency session of the Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece (KEDKE) in the capital to discuss scaling up their protest action ahead of next week's vote.

KEDKE chief Costas Askounis told Parliament's economic affairs committee that the legislation is unconstitutional and undemocratic and called for the provisions relating to a mobility scheme for civil servants to be withdrawn. He proposed that municipalities suspend their operations from Monday through Wednesday.
