2022: A Milestone Year for TUS Airways

01/02/2023 11:05
  • Becoming Cyprus’ Largest & Leading Airline

TUS Airways, Cyprus’ leading and largest airline, announces a record number of passengers in 2022 with an increase of over 1,100% across the entire TUS Airways’ network compared to 2021.  During the year 2022, the airline successfully operated over 600% more flights than the previous year and grew its fleet by 150% with the addition of more Airbus A320 aircraft.

Ahmed Aly, CEO of TUS Airways stated: “Despite the challenges faced by the tourism and air travel industries in recent years, TUS Airways has remained committed & steadfast in growing and supporting the Cypriot and East Mediterranean air travel sectors by enhancing regional connectivity and playing a notable pillar in opening new routes and markets.  TUS Airways recently made a significant investment in tangible assets of approx. US $20 million, becoming the largest Cypriot airline by fleet size, number of destinations and passenger numbers, just months after relaunching in late 2021. This was, by no means, an easy feat and was only possible through the support of our shareholders, working closely with our partners in hospitality, the Cypriot Ministries of Transportation and Tourism and of course the dedication of the fantastic team at our airline.”

During 2022, TUS Airways contributed immensely to the rebound of passenger and tourist numbers to the island. Despite the uncertainty created by the pandemic and overnight loss of the Russian & Ukrainian markets, the airline acted swiftly to support the industry by operating a diverse yet targeted network of routes (scheduled and charter) with notable successes and achievements including:

  • Working under the vision of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism to target the French market and operate flights from Paris to both Larnaca and Paphos - the first Cypriot airline to do so in a number of years.

  • Offering the largest number of seats in the Israeli market during summer 2022, by operating up to 6 daily services between Larnaca & Paphos and Tel Aviv and playing a key role in Israel becoming for the first time the third largest source market for tourism in Cyprus.

  • Further diversifying into new (non-traditional) source markets by operating scheduled and charter services to Spain, Italy, Slovakia, and Austria.

  • Offering incredibly competitive fares across the entire network to stimulate and attract visitors.

  • Investing in Cypriot aviation development such as record recruitment drives, infrastructural developments, cadet programs and working on multiple joint projects with Cypriot aviation stakeholders.

  • Playing a flagship role in supporting our nation not only through the provision of scheduled and charter services but also operating flights on behalf of the Cypriot government and Cypriot football clubs.

  • Recognising the important role Cyprus has in the region by making history and operating the first-ever flight between Qatar and Israel in November 2022.

  • Receiving overwhelming support and recognition for developments by our guests, partners, and national & international institutes.

2023 will mark yet another exciting year for the airline reinforcing and expanding its network from Cyprus & the East Mediterranean with more flights to more destinations. The airline will continue to focus on connecting Cyprus to more new and emerging markets and not focusing on where other airlines fly. The airline aims to support markets that not only attract international visitors from new and unserved markets but also cater to the needs of the Cypriot community in their travels - be it for business, pleasure, education or visiting families.

Aly added: “Looking ahead to 2023, TUS Airways is very well positioned to capitalise on the unique geographical location of the island at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East, to continue to play a pivotal role in the recovery of air travel and tourism to the island.  Over the coming weeks, we will be announcing more exciting destinations for summer 2023 serving a record number of destinations.  As the largest Cypriot airline, this is our commitment to our beautiful island and to ensure we become a key pillar of the Republic’s tourism, aviation, and investment sectors.”
