Annual Lecture in Economics 2018

21/05/2018 13:14

The Cyprus Economic Society in collaboration with Bank of Cyprus and the Central Bank of Cyprus are hosting the 2018 Annual Lecture in Economics.

The Lecture will take place on Friday, 1 June at 6 pm at the Solon Triantafyllides Conference Hall, Bank of Cyprus Head Offices (51 Stasinou Street, Strovolos).

The 2018 Lecture will host Pascal Lamy who will address the subject ‘Harnessing Globalisation’. The topic has been chosen for its contemporary significance at a time when protectionist threats are reviving, trade tensions between the United States and China in particular are rising, and the post-war architecture of world trade is being challenged amidst enduring global imbalances.

Pascal Lamy has a long history in public life and his work focusses on globalisation and trade as well as on European integration. He is currently the President Emeritus of the ‘Jacques Delors Institute’, a European think tank based in Paris founded by Jacques Delors in 1996. Prior to that, during 1984-1994, he served as Head of Cabinet to the President of the European Commission, Jacques Delors, including the role of G7 Sherpa. In November 1994, he joined the team responsible for the rescue of Credit Lyonnais, and later became CEO of the bank until its privatisation in 1999. From 1999 to 2004, Pascal was EU Trade Commissioner under Commission President Romano Prodi and between September 2005 and August 2013 he served as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.

The Lecture is open to the public.
