Entrepreneurs line up for final stage of annual Stelios awards in Cyprus

21/09/2012 11:39
Finalists have been selected for the last remaining stage of the Stelios Award for Business Co-operation in Cyprus - 2012. This prestigious €250, 000 competition is now in its fourth year under the sponsorship of the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, the education-to-entrepreneurship charity headed by easyJet founder, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou.

The Award, aimed at promoting harmonious business partnerships between the island’s Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot entrepreneurs, attracted close to 30 applications by the deadline for entry on August 31. The final stage involves in-depth assessment of the entrepreneurial partnerships by Stelios and his team before five winning partnerships are presented with a €50,000 cheque by Sir Stelios at a ceremony at the newly-minted Stelios House in Limassol on October 15. Teams must consist of at least one Greek-Cypriot and one Turkish-Cypriot entrepreneur working together for the benefit of the whole island.

Sir Stelios said:

“I am always pleasantly surprised by the quality of each and every year’s applications - 2012 is certainly no exception. It is an incredibly hard task to pick finalists from our initial list of applicants and I know it will be equally difficult to choose the eventual winners”.

“For the first time since we launched the Stelios Award for Business Cooperation in Cyprus, we have received many more applications from start-up partnerships; out of the close to 30 applications, many are businesses formed less than year ago. We see this as tangible proof that the spirit of entrepreneurship is alive and well on the island of Cyprus. I’d like to think that these Awards have helped to encourage social change and bi-communal business activity across the Green Line.”

Since its inception in 2009, the Stelios Award for Business Cooperation in Cyprus has been received by a wide variety of teams from a diverse range of business sectors, to include consulting, manufacturing, trade, tourism, web development and the arts. This year marks the final year of Sir Stelios’ initial commitment of €1 million to promote entrepreneurship and business cooperation between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities on the island.

Looking forward, Sir Stelios will continue to support entrepreneurship in Cyprus in 2013 with ten awards of €10,000 to each winning team. He has called on other organizations, companies and entrepreneurs to join in the support of this Award with equal amounts of matched funding.
