KPMG Cyprus participated as Strategic Partnerat the 146th European Study Group with Industry (2nd CY Study Group with Industry), held at the University of Cyprus on 3-7 December 2018. During this intensive, weeklong workshop, 37 researchers from Cyprus and all over the world have worked on 3 societal and business challenges, in collaboration with companies and NGOs, utilising mathematical modelling and data analysis. The three challenges were:

  • Smart Separations Ltd: ‘’Optimizing the performance of a conical ceramic membrane’’
  • AIPFE Cyprus – Women of Europe: ‘’Breaking barriers for women in science’’
  • VTS Vasilikos Terminal Services: ‘’Fuel saving strategies for tugboats’’.

By the end of the ESGI146 many academia-industry collaborations were initiated for all three challenges and these will be formalised in the near future through postgraduate research projects, consulting agreements, joint funding proposals, internships etc.

ESGI146 is organised by the Mathematics for Industry Network (MI-NET), Horizon 2020 project SciShops.eu where KPMG Cyprus is a project partner and Cardiff University (School of Mathematics) in collaboration with the University of Cyprus. The opening (3/12) and closing (7/12) events were both open to the public where significant number of academics, business executives, NGO representatives and policy makers attended.

Antonis Bargilly, Board Member of KPMG Cyprus and Partner in charge of Scishops project, highlighted the opportunities that emerge when the society (citizens, the State, businesses) and the research community liaise closely and collaborate towards the solution of problems.
