Laiki Bank cultural centre initiative in the events for the Cyprus EU Presidency

The Laiki Bank Cultural Centre, under its own initiative and based on the Bank’s policy of corporate and social responsibility, is organising a series of exhibitions and related events in view of Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union. With these presentations the Laiki Bank Cultural Centre contributes to this significant historical period for Cyprus, aiming to present and promote the art, tradition and cultural heritage of the country.

«FROM ARRIVAL TO DEPARTURE»

July – December 2012
Larnaca International Airport

Based on the concept that the first and last impression of every traveller visiting a country is an airport and within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the European Union, the Laiki Bank Cultural Centre in collaboration with Hermes Airports present an exhibition of interactive art works by six artists from three Mediterranean countries of the European Union: Cyprus, Greece and Malta.

All visitors will have the opportunity to view and enjoy these innovative artworks as they pass through Larnaca Airport throughout the duration of the Cypriot Presidency, from the beginning of July until the end of December 2012.

Pierides – Laiki Bank Museum, Larnaca

During the last 10 years, many renowned artists have presented their creations in the galleries of the Pierides – Laiki Bank Museum. The artists’ works were inspired by the invaluable archaeological collection of the Museum and were exhibited within the framework of the annual event «A Meeting of Contemporary and Ancient Art». During the Cypriot Presidency, the Museum will host an artistic proposal by the well known Cypriot artist Theodoulos Gregoriou, entitled «Layers of Time».

«BEYOND DRESS CODES»

September 2012 – May 2013
Byron Avenue Museum, Nicosia

A thematic exhibition that seeks to create a dialogue between Greek and Cypriot traditional costume with contemporary fashion. The exhibition presents 140 original drawings depicting traditional Greek and Cypriot costumes by illustrator Gisi Papageorgiou and 40 original contemporary sartorial creations of prominent fashion designers such as: Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Sophia Kokosalaki, Angelos Bratis, Dimitris Dassios, Yiorgos Eleftheriadis, Parthenis, Loukia, MiRo, Mastori / Motwary, Ioannis Guia, Thanos Kyriakides, Deux Hommes, with an additional 20 creations by Cypriot fashion designers and internationally renowned Cypriot designer Hussein Chalayan.

The exhibition is organised by the Laiki Bank Cultural Centre in collaboration with the Cyprus Fashion Designers Association and the Hellenic American Union.

«BEFORE DRESS CODES: FROM TRADITION TO MODERNITY»

October 2012 – May 2013
Laiki Bank Cultural Centre Hall, Nicosia
A retrospective exhibition documenting the evolution of traditional Cypriot attire from the Byzantine period to the 1960s. The exhibition includes archive photographs, engravings, as well as costumes, fabrics, accessories and jewellery from the Ethnographic Collection of the Laiki Bank Cultural Centre and from the Aziz Damdelen Collection of Turkish Cypriot dress.

Byron Avenue Museum, Nicosia
This stylised art exhibition presents the evolution, development, aesthetics and social role of Cyprus art in Antiquity, in the Byzantine, the Medieval, the Ottoman and the Colonial periods to the present day, with a selection from the Antiquity Collection, the Ethnographic Collection, as well as the Contemporary Art Collection of the Laiki Bank.

Compact and easily navigated, the exhibition interweaves art from the past with contemporary art to provide an informative and interactive experience.

Part of the exhibition is on display, as an introduction to the main exhibition, in the inner Foyer of the European Parliament House of Cyprus.

Finally, the Laiki Bank Cultural Centre will take part with important exhibits taken from its collections in three other exhibitions: the Bozar Centre for Fine Arts and the Royal Museums of Art and History and the Louvre Museum in Paris.
