Melco Cyprus, operator of Cyprus Casinos (C2) and the upcoming integrated resort (IR) City of Dreams Mediterranean, organised an underwater clean-up of Ayia Napa Harbour on Saturday, 12 June 2021. The activity is part of a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability under Melco’s ‘Above & Beyond’ Strategy, while supporting efforts of the local community to effectively address increasing challenges.

The event took place under the auspices of Ayia Napa Municipality, with the support of the Non-Governmental Organisation Nautilos. Aiming to raise awareness on the impact of pollution on the Mediterranean Sea’s ecosystem as well as contributing towards the reduction of marine litter, 10 Melco colleagues and 30 Nautilos volunteers dove in the sea at Ayia Napa Harbour to collect litter from the seabed.

Property General Manager of City of Dreams Mediterranean and Cyprus Casinos, Mr. Grant Johnson, stated,I would like to extend my deep gratitude to the Municipality of Ayia Napa and Nautilos for making this event possible. Special thanks also to our colleagues who volunteered their time to take part in the clean-up. Cyprus and Ayia Napa are known to be home to some of the Mediterranean Sea’s beaches with the best water quality. It is therefore our duty to protect the country’s valuable marine environment from emerging environmental challenges as we further advance our CSR activities with this unique seabed clean-up. Melco’s sustainable development stands at the core of our philosophy and as such, our objectives are to proactively address key environmental and social challenges by implementing long-term strategic planning and sustainable practices in our resorts across the globe.”

The Alderman of Ayia Napa, Mr. Antonis Christou, said, “We are delighted to have joined forces with Melco to launch the underwater clean-up of the Ayia Napa Harbour. As we are immensely proud of our Municipality’s beaches, which are among the most awarded with the EU blue flag, we strongly believe that such initiatives are paramount to raising awareness on how important it is to keep our beaches and seabed litter free. On behalf of Ayia Napa Municipality, I would like to thank Melco for its strong commitment. Melco and Cyprus Casinos have brought about real benefits to our area, with the operation of the Ayia Napa satellite casino, while through their CSR activity and local community engagement they have not only contributed in strengthening our city’s tourism product, but enhancing the local community as a whole.”

Environmental protection is one of the strategic pillars of Melco's CSR program in Cyprus. Melco’s commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected across its operational and strategic development decisions, while best practices in sustainability extend to all its properties globally as part of the Group’s sustainability strategy ‘Above & Beyond’.
