PwC Cyprus, as part of its Corporate Responsibility programme, supported the first marathon for the development of applications on innovative technologies in the field of financial transactions, which was organised by the Bank of Cyprus on 9, 10 and 11 June in Nicosia. This is the first time the Fintech Hackathon is taking place in Cyprus and the aim is to support entrepreneurship and innovation.

The event was attended by programmers, analysts, designers, communication advisers, marketers, professionals, officials of the banking sector as well as students interested in fintech and digital applications. The marathon, which took place over an entire weekend, saw the participation of 17 teams that had the opportunity to be guided by specialised mentors and watch interesting presentations by prominent figures in the Fintech industry. After a committee completed its evaluation, the winning teams figpay, Empty Coffee Cups, Heroes Lab and Error 404: Name Not Found received monetary prizes.

It should be noted that PwC members took part in the event through different roles. Specifically, Jonathan Mulder, Director, Fintech & Digital at PwC UK, took part in the open side event Cyprus Fintech Forumheld on Saturday, 10 June, analysing the usefulness of emerging technologies to come up with solutions that will make financial services more efficient and user-friendly to both consumers and the business world. Michalis Stavrides, Director, Responsible for Entrepreneurship at PwC Cyprus, was part of the evaluation committee while Nicholas Roussos, Senior Manager and Demos Demou, Manager in Consulting, PwC Cyprus, took part as team mentors.

Commenting on PwC’s participation, Philippos Soseilos, Partner, In charge of Consulting, stressed the importance the organisation gives to new technologies and entrepreneurship, as well as giving young people the opportunity to showcase their talent and skills. “The power of innovation, when combined with entrepreneurship, can significantly contribute towards our country’s economic prosperity and growth. All of us at PwC support events such as the Fintech Hackathon, which is an excellent initiative by the Bank of Cyprus. Through their participation, all the companies that supported the event united their efforts for a better future”.
