According to CYSTAT data released on Monday, exports in August recorded a significant increase of 45% to £52 million against £36 million in the corresponding month of 2004. Their total value in January-August increased by 23% to £422 million against £343 million in the corresponding period of 2004.
Similarly, imports showed an increase of 8% to £214 million in August against £198 million last year.
The total value of exports in January-August 2005 surged 6% to £1,806 million against £1,708 million in 2004.
This is mostly attributable to the island’s accession in the EU, which pushed the arrivals of EU goods up. In January-August, £1,212 of the total imports was from EU countries.
The foreign trade data are not fully comparable due to the different methods that CYSTAT used before May 2004.
