Cyprus imports down, exports up in April

Cyprus imports were down by 34.2% in April this year while exports were up by 1.7%, preliminary data published by the Cyprus Statistical Service, on Tuesday, show. At the same time, on the basis of an electronic publication of data for March 2020 the trade deficit increased to €1,365.5 mn in the first quarter of this year compared to €1,049.6 mn in the first quarter of 2019.

On the basis of CyStat’s preliminary estimates on the foreign trade of Cyprus in April 2020, total imports of goods reached €413.2 mn compared to €628.3 mn in April last year, recording a drop of 34.2%.

Imports from other EU Member States in April this year were €270.2 mn and from third countries €143.0 mn compared to €399.4 mn and €228.8 mn respectively in April 2019.

Total exports of goods in April 2020 were €248.7 mn compared to €244.6 mn in April 2019, recording a rise of 1.7%.

Exports to other EU member states were €64.5 mn and to third countries €184.2mn compared to €82.3 mn and €162.3 mn respectively in April 2019.

Trade deficit increases in first quarter of 2020

Total imports of goods in January – March 2020 amounted to €2,108.4 mn compared to €1,990.0 mn in January – March 2019, recording an increase of 6.0%. Total exports of goods in January – March 2020 were €742.9 mn compared to €940.3 mn in January – March 2019, registering a drop of 21.0%.

The trade deficit was €1,365.5 mn in January – March 2020 compared to €1,049.6 mn in the corresponding period of 2019, CyStat says.
During March 2020 total imports were valued at €639.2 mn compared to €602.7 mn in March 2019, recording an increase of 6.1%.

Exports of domestically produced products, including stores and provisions, in March 2020 were €91.9 mn compared to €90.8 mn in March 2019, whilst exports of foreign products, including stores and provisions, in March 2020 were €212.9 mn as compared to €126.7 mn in March 2019.

Domestic exports of industrial products in March 2020 were €82.5 mn compared to €78.2 mn in March 2019. Domestic exports of agricultural products in March 2020 were €7.8 mn compared to €10.0 mn in March 2019.
