Higher imports & exports January-June 2001

The main developments in Cyprus foreign trade during the period January-June 2001 as compared with January-June 2000, according to latest Cystat statistics, were:

Total imports (covering imports for home consumption and imports placed into bonded warehouses) totalled CYP1.373,2 million as compared with CYP1.136,4 million in January-June 2000. Total exports reached CYP328,0 million compared to CYP306,9 million in January-June 2000. The trade deficit accounted for CYP1.045,3 million compared to CYP829,6 million.

Imports for home consumption were CYP1.176,0 million during January-June 2001 and CYP917,4 million in January-June 2000. Intermediate inputs imported for home consumption valued at CYP361,6 million or 30,8% followed by consumer goods with CYP307,2 million or 26,1%, transport equipment with CYP222,2 million or 18,9%, capital goods with CYP136,6 million or 11,6% and fuels and lubricants with CYP133,5 million or 11,4%.

Domestic exports including shipstores, valued at CYP132,6 million as compared with CYP127,1 million in January-June 2000, whilst re-exports including shipstores, were CYP195,3 million compared to CYP179,7 million in January-June 2000. Industrial products of domestic produce exported during January-June 2001 accounted for CYP90,9 million or 71,8%. Exports of raw agricultural products in January-June 2001 valued at CYP34,8million.

During January-June 2001 the EU countries supplied Cyprus with goods valued at CYP698,5 million or 50,9% and absorbed goods valued at CYP70,0 million or 55,4% of Cyprus domestic exports.
