Retail trade up 12.2% in May

Both the value and volume of retail trade recorded a significant annual increase this May, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service on Friday show.

For the period January-May 2022, the value index is estimated to have recorded an increase of 12.9% and the volume index an increase of 3.4% compared to the same period of 2021.

The Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade for May 2022 increased by 23.9% compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, reaching 141.5 units (2015=100). For the same month, the Turnover Volume Index of Retail Trade increased by 12.2% compared to May 2021, reaching 131.3 units, according to the official data.

In particular, the biggest increase in value was observed in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores, recording a 55.1% rise. The retail sale of computers and telecommunications equipment, curtains, carpets, books, stationery, sporting equipment, toys, flowers, plants, watches, jewellery, etc recorded an increase of 36.3% and textiles, clothing, footwear increased by 24.3%

The biggest increase in volume was recorded in the retail sale of computers and telecommunications equipment, curtains, carpets, books, stationery, sporting equipment, toys, flowers, plants, watches, jewellery, etc, which noted an increase of 23.4%, textiles, clothing, footwear increased by 20.2% and non-food products (except automotive fuel) increased by 14.5%. The retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores increased by 11.4%.
